This thread is for general discussion of both Sims and Sims 2.
Okay so I bought Sims 2 today. It was either get Sims 2 for 40 dollars (darnit I missed the sale, it was 30 last week at Best Buy) *or* pick up the Sims with all 7 expansion packs for 40. It was a tough decision but I finally decided to go with the newer one, even if that means having to cough up more money in the long run for expansion packs. Did I make the right decision?
Anyways I'm a trifle annoyed with the game. I'm practising on the older couple in the first town, and they can't seem to do *anything* on their own. My brother suggests they may be senile - but are all of the characters this way? I mean, they're like 60, and they don't seem to know how to wash their hands after going to the bathroom, or how to clean up after themselves when they eat...and they drop stuff on the floor and leave it there...It's really annoying. Is the whole game a big babysitting gig? I thought I would get to just observe people sometimes, but I'm busy running around after these two.

It depends on their personalities, at least to some extent, and they will do some pretty stupid things. Paying the bills on Tuesday and Thursday is a good example. I click on the mailbox, the active Sim gets the bills. I pause the game, click on the bills, and if I'm lucky, the Sim will place the bills on the ground, step back, step forward a moment later, pick up the bills, and put them back in the mailbox while the program subtracts money from the family funds. Other Sims, not quite so efficient, will do the same thing, but they don't place the bills on the ground, no; they place the bills on the living room floor or the nearest convenient table (which can be upstairs at the back of the house).
Neat Sims will often clean things on their own, but not always. Most, if bored, will seek out the house computer (if present) and play SSX3. They can and do feed themselves, but not always when they need to. Often, if they need to do something, such as eat, sleep, use the bathroom, whatever, they will turn towards the screen and look right at you, waving their arms and calling for help; what they want or need is revealed in the thought balloon over their heads. They can do a lot on their own, but yes, they need help and some supervision, and it can be a little frustrating and demanding at times, but believe me, it's worth it. The game was the best fourty dollars I've spent in a very long time, and not because I can use it to replicate the gang at Foster's.
The best advice I can give to anyone getting into the game is to pick up a copy of The Sims 2 Prima Official Game Guide, which I've found to be incredibly helpful and useful. It costs about $20.00 (less at Amazon.com); you've got to have this book to get the most out of the game.

I suck majorly at The Sims. They always end up dying in a huge fire or passing out in their own urine. I gave up on it because it was just TOO HARD. *is pathetic*

I never build a house for my Sims without installing a smoke detector near the stove. It's cheap insurance, and it probably save Terrence's life last week, not to mention a half-dozen others since January. Interestingly, when mine go to make dinner on their own they always select the Chef Salad, if their Cooking skill is high enough.

Ah, my Sims always dropped stuff on the floor, and they were piles of trash everywhere... in the end I called a maid to clean up every day, so I don't have to. It's not that hard, just try to distribute well theb points.

One thing that works well for two Sims living together is to give one of them 10 points in Neat. That way the other one can make all the messes he/she wants, and the neat one not only cleans them on his/her own, but has fun while doing so (and builds Cleaning skill at the same time). One family I'm putting together, basically a small retirement home, will have an adult Sim with 10 points in Neat rooming with three Elder Sims that aren't quite so tidy. I think it'll be interesting to watch.

I gave Coco 0 Neat skills. ;D Ed becomes sad seeing the mess she makes, but the maid always cleans everything up. Okay, I'm with the simple Sims.

I have no idea what scores I'm going to give any of the show's major characters. Mac's family wasn't too hard, but the rest I think will require a lot of thought.

I have some big plans, one for a neighborhood filled with characters from animated shows only, and one for families from comic strips. I'm still trying to decide what to import for the TV shows. Anyways I'm working on my first "real" family, the Freebuses from the Ed Grimley cartoon. I have to share the funniest thing that has happened so far. It was really bizarre but I guess it just...happens sometimes? So the Freebuses were minding their own business...I think Dierdre was watching TV and Leo was practising his speech in front of the bathroom mirror. All of a sudden old Mortimer Goth from down the street comes RUNNING into the house - no invite or anything. He's got a thought balloon of our bathroom sink. He runs into the bathroom, stands in front of the sink, and starts ranting and raving at the sink. He does that for a moment, then turns and RUNS back out of the house. The Freebuses ignored the whole thing.

Haha, yeah, that sounds like old Mort . That Sim has done some odd things in my game, too, although nothing quite like that. When you visit Strangetown, send Vicund Curious up to his telescope and within a minute or two you'll see something seriously weird.

Can any of the other Sims 2 players here tell me how I might make adult-only hair usable by teens? I have hair that would be perfect for a certain Imaginary Friend but only adults can use it, and the IF in question is a teen. Help!

I need to do the exact same thing (I found some hair that would look great on Lydia Deetz but its for adults). Teen bodies have different meshes than adults, I've seen some strange results from people trying to use an adult mesh on a teen. Since I don't understand meshes, I think you'd better ask on modthesims or somewhere like that.

Hey here's my self-Sim (talking to my brother): img154.imageshack.us/img154/3093/me15rb.jpgIt seriously looks just like me, I'm impressed. I chose the fat bodytype, which in the game really only adds weight to the stomach and the rear end (moreso the latter for women) which is what I actually look like, lol. So far I have the following households: Myself and my brother The Membranes (from Invader Zim) The McFaddens and the Harveys (from Casper) The Freebuses, the Malones, and Ed Grimley (from the Ed Grimley cartoon) The Oblongs (from...the Oblongs, lol) BJ, Jacques, and Ginger (from Beetlejuice) The Deetzes (also from Beetlejuice) The Generics (from Bobby's World) Planned: The Ghostbusters Mac's family The Duncans (from the comic strip Zits) The Lopezes (from the comic strip Yenny) The Mallards (from Darkwing Duck) The Oyls (from Popeye, and probably Popeye Wimpy and Bluto too) The Andersons (from Life With Louie) Various MST3K characters The Hills (from King of the Hill) Probably more I swear I spend all my time building and creating and none actually *playing*.
