What I find weird about Duchess is in the piolet, she'd KILL (literally) to get out of the house, but in Duchess of Wails, she couldn't BE more picky. Or rude, for that matter. I mean, what the dealio, Craig? Lauren? Simple, she wants out of Foster's because it's a dump. She doesn't want to end up in another dump, or some place even worse. She would kill to be with a rich family, not just any family. Even though she wasn't plotting murder to get out of Foster's... she just wanted revenge.

Her accent sounds familiar but I can't place it. I think it might be Romanian. It DOES sound a bit Romanian, now that you mention it. Last year, all the "Special Ed" and Resource teachers at our school were Romanian women, per a contract with our SC State Dept. of Education and the Romanian government, sort of an exchange program. One in particular reminded me of Duchess, in her voice and attitude, at least, though she certainly didn't LOOK like her! She had sarcasm, and she knew how to use it! She was also not afraid to speak her mind, something that most teachers in South Carolina were afraid to do, but since she was there as a foreign exchange teacher, arranged by the state of South Carolina, the school district couldn't do anything! She and I got along quite well, actually, and I have to say I admired her spunk, even though she stepped on quite a few toes, especially of parents and administrators whose main goal in life is to PREVENT teachers from doing our real jobs and educating kids! This woman would not hesitate to call a spade a spade and if she thought that some policy or the other was stupid, she'd let everyone know it, loud and clear. Duchess is like that, too, and I have to wonder that IF she were allowed to leave Foster's and go to France, or be adopted by a family she actually liked, how different she might act. pitbulllady

That's pretty amazing. In fact, princefala, I can see someone taking your post and turning it into a full-length fanfic. Excellent job! Gregory Maguire should write a book called 'The Life and Times of Duchess Diamond Persnickity the First Last and Only', which shows how the Duchess got to be such a grouchy old crone, and how imaginary friends are treated like a racial minority. Then they make a Broadway musical out of it.
