Am I the only one who gets really annoyed when people say that, about ANY animated movie or tv series? Does it bother anyone else here when people suggest that ALL animation is made for little kids, and that it's stupid and pointless for adults to have a serious discussion of the character developement, plot, sub-plot, culture references, and potential "back-story" for an animated series or movie, or even watch it in the first place? Am I the only one who gets aggravated that most people, even those who DO watch animation, still think of it as "for little kids", and consider it dumb to discuss it in the same manner as we might discuss live-action tv or movies?
I'd like to know the collective feelings of all on this, and lurkers, please feel free to post-I know you're there.
Anyway, I'm reminded of two situations, one of which I've read about, and one I actually experienced. The first took place in the 1930's, with the release of the Disney movie, "Bambi". A reporter asked the late Walt Disney if he didn't think it might be inappropriate to include things like Bambi's mother being killed, or the forest fire, in a "children's movie". Mr. Disney replied, "I do not make movies for CHILDREN. I make movies for EVERYONE!" The second took place a few years ago, when I was forced to ask my father to record an episode of an animated series for me, after my VCR broke. He agreed, but I could hear the disapproval in his voice. When I went to pick up the tape at his house, he confronted me with this, "Why do you watch this? This stuff is for children!" I pointed to the shelves of DVD's he has, to "Sweet Home Alabama", "Steel Magnolias", "Chocolat", and many other similar titles, and said, "How do YOU watch THIS? These are 'chick flicks, and they are made for WOMEN!" We made a mutual agreement there and then-he would not "dis" my animation, and I won't "dis" his love of "chick flicks".

Although I do not think it is *wrong* for people to put deep feelings and thought into discussions of shows that may be targeted for kids, I also dislike it when "it's just a cartoon" is used as a dismissive counterargument. I do however think that no matter how deeply someone wants to discuss a show, they do need to *remember* that it *is* a childrens' cartoon however, and that sometimes some things cannot be explained. Like I'm always saying, I myself can see a cartoon in both ways, and I can appreciate both arguments, but as with anything I think it is wrong for one group to impose its views on another. So the same goes for people who like to read more into the show trying to convince someone who doesn't, that they should.
Part of the reason I did not make it into my chosen field of writing for animation is because of my parents' total lack of support for what I wished to do. I was always put down for investing so much time into animation, as it was stupid and pointless and made only to sell overpriced toys. I am still very angry at my parents for the way they treated me while I was trying to make my way in the world, and will always be bitter for my failure.

I just don't mention it unless someone asks what I watched the night before. When I'm then asked why I watch a kid's show, I reply that it's a funny, well-written program with likable characters and invite the questioner to check it out, it's pretty good. If that's not enough, I can always point out that anything is better than the crap the networks are showing, which usually ends the discussion right there.
I've often found that people who use dismissive phrases like "it's just a cartoon" are just a little too impressed with themselves and their own sense of maturity. They probably won't be the best parents later in life. One has to feel a touch of pity for such closed-minded people, for they truly don't know what they're missing.

I am also sick of the remark "it's just a kid's cartoon". Because quite honestly, I surley don't think this cartoon is just for kids. I know of a wide range of audiences that watches. I have gotten many of my friends into this show, but some people are really hard to swerve. I just recently had a discussion with one of my friends on the phone two Sundays ago, and it just happened that Foster's was coming on soon. When she found out I was about to watch it, all she could do was insult me, and tell me instead of watching cartoons, I should be watching all the shows "that people my age are supposed to watching, like Laguna Beach". Gah...give me a break Okay, so I'm 16, and all I watch is cartoons, except for Lost. I honestly don't see a problem in that at all. I think it's just a matter of acceptance, and some people aren't so accepting.

Ok well forgive me if I rant a little... ^_^
Foster's is NOT a "kid's show", first of all. It's clearly MOSTLY made for them, but intended for an older audience as well as there are obviously some adultish jokes and such that kids aren't likely to understand. It's more like a "general audience" show, rated G to keep it clean, and aimed mostly to entertain children but clearly McCracken had adults in mind, too. I love how pitbulllady pointed out to her father about his "chick flicks". LOL That had me giggling. But it's true...people will get on your case about one thing and then themselves do something that could also be questionable. We have a word for these kinds of people...HYPOCRITES. But anyway....what it comes down to? YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO WATCH WHATEVER THE HECK YOU WANT TO WATCH!! Am I right, people? ^_^ Long live Foster's fans!

I couldn't agree more, labloogirl. Nonetheless, I reserve the right to give my brother grief for watching professional wrestling.

I understand what you mean... sometimes, I tell my friends about Foster's (or any other of my favorite cartoons) and say "Maybe you should watch it some time, it's really funny" and most of them are like "It's kind of a kids show..." and I'm like "No, just because it has no swearing or rude words and some of the characters act immature, it doesn't make it a kid show that's what makes it funny and happier show, plus it has less disrespectful for people". (For example South Park is very disrespectful to differant groups of people) and I told one of my friends about it and she decided to watch it once and then she told me "Foster's isn't that bad, at first I thought it was stupid and it's actually kind of funny."
I'm probaly missing some other stuff I wanna say about this topic, but oh well if I think of something else important I'll just post another reply.

Well, I haven't got such a problem. My parents don't like Foster's, but they don't say anything bad about cartoons, for they still like Tom&Jerry and Disney cartoons.
And about the "mature feeling"... I've got a friend who's now 20, and before she used to say stuff like "SOFIA!!! You're watching PPG?! How old are you, 3?!" or "Hope you don't like KND! OMG, will never talk to you again..." and now she's like "Aw, Foster's! That's the cutest cartoon EVER!"

Ya, I hate it when people think that all cartoons are stupid. I watch whatever makes me laugh, cartoons [and the ocasional Seinfield, Seinfield is funny. ;D] make me laugh. I hate it when my sister says I should be watching MTV and shows that kids my age [I'm 15] are "supposed to watch." Excuse me? Supposed to watch? I had no idea there was a law that said 15 year olds are supposed to watch MTV and reality shows. My sister also thinks I should be listing to Hillary Duff and Ashlee Simpson and thinks I should stop listing to Evanescence which she apparntly thinks is "gothic." She won't admit that at one point she liked Evanescence, or, that only a year ago, she was watching Spongebob Squarepants. My sister is the perfect example of a person who will listen and watch things just because everyone else does. Nobody should ever do that, in my opion. If you happen to like something that's popular and lots of other people like it, that's fine. Everybody should watch and listen to whatever makes them happy. And, guess what? Shows like Foster's and bands like Evanescence makes me happy, and noone, not even my sister, can do anything about it. Oh, I better stop posting before this becomes an endless rant about my sister. ;D But, i'd like to end of with this: Foster's rule and I will be a fan of it forever! ;D

I totally agree - and MTV is complete idiot-vision, no matter what age you are. It seems all the programs are made for people with short-attention spans, and interest in nothing but tabloid rubbish...give me cartoons any day! (in fact, every day) "Everybody should watch and listen to whatever makes them happy." - whether it's about films, tv, music, or whatever, that should be the bottom line - no question!
