I wasn't quite sure where to put this, since it involves the six-foot Wilt plush that Sparky sent me, but since it IS Foster's related without exactly having to do with the show, per se, I put it here.
My sister came over to visit, bringing her two daughters, including the oldest, my three-year-old niece. As soon as she got there, the little red-head went running into the den, to look at my tarantulas(which fascinate her; she used to think they were CATS), while my sister and I were still in the kitchen. I'd placed the Wilt doll on the couch in the sofa, stretched out with his feet and head propped up, like he was watching tv. Almost as soon as she got into the den, Sydney came running back out, her face pale, whimpering and clinging to her mom. My sister asked, "Baby! What's WRONG?" and Sydney, looking back over her shoulder towards the den, said, "There's somebody IN THERE!" When my sister asked her who it was(she didn't know about the doll, yet), Sydney told her, "I don' know...some red man is sleepin' on the couch!" I thought I was gonna fall in the floor, and as soon as my sister saw what this "red man" was, she thought it was pretty funny, too! Poor Sydney, though-I don't think she's going to become a Wilt fangirl anytime soon, after the scare he gave her, LOL! We couldnt' even convince her to touch him, to show her that he was a stuffed doll, poor kid!

AHHHHH, THERE'S A RED MAN SLEEPING IN THERE, AHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!---sorry, I had to do that. Oh man this story had me on the floor, poor kid! What's really funny, though, is that I have a HUGE collection of Stitch plushies, many with their teeth showing, as well as some detailed Randall figurines, a Randall t-shirt and a two small Randall plushies, and Sydney has never been afraid of either Randall or Stitch. I've got a life-size Stitch plushie with his teeth showing and claws bared menacingly, and both Randall and Stitch have some impressive and potentially scary chompers. Sydney's even watched Monsters, Inc., and was like, "LOOK! It's RANDALL!"; it never occured to her that she was supposed to be afraid of him or dislike him, and to her, Stitch is just a dog. Yet she's afraid of Wilt! pitbulllady

Well, he does have that wonkey eye and a stub arm. I'm sure Wilt is fine with it. XD

Aw you see. That's cuteness. And also a possible reason why Wilt in the show hasn't been adopted by younger kids. He would be kinda terrifying all tall 'n red and missing an arm and eye. (how did I type leg? wtf)
But I hope Wilt hasn't mentally scarred her for life!

My sister came back over today and brought me a present(a coffee mug warmer, since I'm severely addicted to coffee and don't have space in my classroom for a coffee maker)from her and the girls(adorable teacher bracelet). At first, Sydney didn't want to go in the den where Wilt was, but after about an hour and a half of staring at him(in between wanting to play with tarantulas-girl does take after me in some respects), she finally did go over and touch him. She didn't notice yesterday that he only had one arm and that "wonky" eye(am I the only one for whom that word has become part of your everyday vocabulary now?), since she wouldn't get close enough to see that, but once I pointed it out, that really bothered her. "Why's he only got one arm, huh?", "did somebody cut it off?" "WHY did somebody cut it off?", "WHO cut it off?", "Did he go to the doctor?", "Did he cry?", "Where's HIS mommy?" "Did the policeman put the people in jail?(presumably whoever hurt Wilt)", "Did he have a Band-Aid?"-she literally bombarded me with questions about that arm, that I really couldn't answer. She still was not totally comfortable with him, since when I picked up his hand and held it out for her to touch, she backed off. Sydney loves to watch animated tapes and DVD's, though, so I let her take home some of my first and second-season Foster's tapes, so that she can put a voice and a personality with the former object of her fear, and hopefully that will make him a whole lot less intimidating.
CG has a point, though, that a lot of kids probably ARE scared of Wilt, because he's so tall and because he's "broken". I know that many small children tend to be frightened of humans who are "different", like blind people or people in wheelchairs, if they aren't used to seeing that. I used to be absolutely terrified of blind people, or even people I THOUGHT were blind, like anyone with really dark shades, when I was a little kid, even though I probably didn't really comprehend what being blind meant.

One of the greatest presents I ever got was one of those coffee mug warmer things. Seriously. I've been using "wonky" since I was in high school, I got it from a friend. More recently I used it around a coworker who grew up in England and she told me that "wonky" is fairly common British slang. I didn't know that. What a thoughtful kid to think of all those questions!

Sydney is a bright kid, and already showing a lot of artistic promise, too, as well as a keen interest in "creepy crawlies". My sister has to carefully check her pockets if she's been outside, since she will stuff any critter she picks up in them, like earthworms or grasshoppers, and my sister is SO not into things like that, LOL! It's pretty much a trial by fire for her to check her daughter's pockets! Sydney has been fascinated by spiders since before she could even talk, much more than I was as a kid, almost to the point that I find myself worrying that she's going to pick up the "wrong kind" of spider, since we have a lot of Black Widows and Brown Recluse spiders here. Just to illustrate how comfortable she is with them, I was showing her the HUGE Wooly Pink-Toe tarantula I got recently(the one I put up on my DA site); this spider is every bit of seven inches in diameter. Tarantulas of this genus,( Avicualaria, tend to be a bit skittish and like to jump, since they're arboreal, and leap from branch to branch like eight-legged flying squirrels. Well, while I had the spider on my arm, she decided to take one of those flying-squirrel leaps-straight towards my niece! I almost panicked, NOT because I was worried about the spider hurting Sydney, but because I was worried that Sydney would freak out and slap the spider away or throw it, and tarantulas are very delicate creatures that are easily killed that way. Instead, Sydney put out her two hands, palms up, and the spider made a perfect landing on them! Sydney's reaction? "She's SOFT...what's her name?" THAT aspect of my niece's personality is what made the whole "Wiltaphobia" so strangely funny! pitbulllady
