Hello everyone! I'm new here and I probably won't be posting much, which, given the common sentiment on this particular topic, will likely be a good thing ^_-
Feedback from the other side of the spectrum; I like slash. A lot. I read it and I write it. I also like nonslash and straight pairings. Romance in general has always appealed to me, no matter who is giving it. Love is love, as they say.
I am, however, quite picky with my pairings. I refuse to read non-con, incest and paedo fic. Ditto for bestiality and mpreg, because I find such things generally tasteless and repulsive. I also never really understood the need to pile on mountains of angst and violence into fanfic, especially for a fandom such as this. (Mac's mum abusive? Does not compute).
It should go without saying that I do NOT approve of the Mac/Bloo pairing that seems to be popular at fanfiction.net. Like someone on this forum already said, I'd really rather see Mac just being his sweet, eight-year-old self (though, admittedly, I did think he was rather cute with Goo). I'm not terribly fond of Frankie/Herriman either. Not nearly as hurty as Mac/Bloo, but pretty hurty all the same (human/nonhuman pairings just aren't my taste).
In reading and writing, my prime concern is that the characters in question are actually in love, or could easily be so (also, if characters have been given canonical love-interests, or something occurs in the episode to prove that they swing one way or the other, I generally leave them alone). I've never really understood why people insist on pairing together characters who sooner kill eachother than cuddle.
. . . Yes, Harry/Draco 'shippers, I am looking at you
My pairing of choice is Wilt/Eduardo. I see them first and foremost as a mostly "cute" pairing (the sort of couple that are more like best friends who hug and kiss and call eachother stupid pet names). Granted I'm currently working on a more mature fic for them at the moment (a sort of creative challenge if you will), but for the most part, they're actually one of the more innocent pairings I've involved myself with. I've written and completed a lighthearted, G-rated slashfic for them in which they toe the line between really good friends and officially, romantically involved. It's called "Something In The Water" and it's on ff.n for those who are curious.
Actually, I'd be really intrigued to hear what nonslashers think, be it good or bad. I'm always out for a good round of constructive criticism and if the nonbelievers say that my characterisations were convincing, I'll know I've done a good job. Likewise, if you don't buy it, I'll have something to work toward next time ^_^
Wilt and Eduardo are best friends. In the series, there is nothing to suggest they are anything more, but there is also nothing to prove such a notion wrong. All of the other main cast have been given a love interest, however temporary (Mac and Bloo both fell for Frankie, Frankie's had at least one boyfriend and Coco was quite smitten with that floor lamp in "Partying" (still amuses me). Not sure if Mr. Herriman's charade with Coco counts, but that's all he's gotten that we know of, poor bloke). Wilt and Eduardo, however, have not. Thus, in my little slash-happy brain they are eligible bachelors.
However, "eligible" does not necessarily equal "compatible" for me. Two characters in a series could be more available in their canon than fast food in America, but I still wouldn't slash them unless I saw valid potential. Consider Eduardo; He is a timid and skittish, yet affectionate and playful guy with the mind of a little kid. He needs someone patient and understanding enough not only to put up with him, but appreciate him for the sweetheart he really is. Over to endlessly patient/understanding and impossibly kindhearted Wilt, who lives to make others happy. Sad to think, but he probably has a very limited sense of self-worth and defines himself by what he does for others. He needs to be needed. I do believe that his past scarred him both physically and psychologically and the last thing I want is to see him hurt again. Well, who better to ensure that than a Guardian friend? ^_-
. . . Wow, I really wrote a novel, didn't I? I tend to go on and on, so I do. Very sorry ^_^;
In conclusion, I like to think I'm at the very least, fairly tasteful or at least half-decent as a slasher; I make every effort to adhere to canon first and foremost and love/chemistry/consent comes before anything beyond. I don't see the appeal of abuse, rape, and wangst. Please pass the giggles and sunshine and Troo Wuv. Frankly, I wish more slashers and straight-ers alike would concern themselves with the same, but, alas.
Or, I could also just be far too picky for my own good
