I would like very much to create a section of this forum, accessible only to approved registered members, where discussions and fanart/fanfic containing mature content can be explored. What I was thinking of doing was creating a board category only accessible to registered members on whom I had set a special "permission" (that way if someone proves they can't handle participating in that area I can remove that permission without having to actually ban them). I even tested this out today and it works fine. I was going to remove the automatic censor filter on here and just make sure everyone knows that foul language wouldn't be tolerated outside of the mature area (and would only be tolerated inside it if handled tactfully). Yes I had all these plans. Then I read the main Proboards TOS and found out that Proboards will not allow discussions/images relating to sex, among other harsh topics which I would normally have allowed. In other words: if we want to have such a section, this board will have to find another home, on another server, which allows adult content. So I need two things from you: one, to vote on whether or not you're interested in going to that sort of trouble (and just so you know, *I* am), and two, to help me try and find a suitable host. It does NOT have to be free, just not...*too* expensive. OR if someone is willing to help (and I can ask my programmer brother about it too) perhaps a forum could be constructed with perl, php, or sql (all of which my site supports) and the forum could then be simply homed on theneitherworld.com. But it would probably be better and easier and look neater if it was a forum service. Vote "Yes" if you want to SEE an adult section, it doesn't mean you must participate in it, just be interested in it existing here (and I may restrict it to users 18 and above, not 13 and above, just remember that). Vote "No" if you don't want the community to have such a section, whether you ignore it or not. (Don't be shy to do that if that's how you feel. If I was not the admin of this board I would probably vote "No" myself! I just want people to be happy here.) Otherwise please vote "It doesn't matter" so I know at least that people are voting. Thanks. This thread is open for discussion. I'd especially like to know what people think about the age restriction on such a section - what age is usually set on other forums? ~Sparky

I don't have a strong opinion on my own participation in such discussions. Basically I would treat it the way I treat the rest of the board, which is to post a reply when I have something to say and read everything else to see where the subject goes. I'm voting "yes" because, for me, there is a larger issue of free speech here as well, and I cannot abide censorship in any form (well, almost any, but that's another story).

I voted that it doesn't really matter. I wouldn't touch topics that contain strong sexual content, though. Not much else to say on that.
So, are you looking for a new hosting provider? Can you deal with $6 a month for a full year?

I can deal with more than that, lol. Give me names if you have them so I can look at them. If you post them here others can look at them and tell me what they think, too.

My provider is ICDSoft. They offer two different plans: Universal and Business. Universal begins at $6 a month for a 1-year contract, and I believe Business is $10. They just recently increased the bandwidth, space, databases, and so on.

I've got mixed feelings about, personally. I don't mind pics with a an erotic leaning, but this opens the door to outright hentai, which I really don't care for. Adult discussions I can deal with, but I outgrew the gore and violence pics shortly after I graduated from college. Still, I understand that others like 'em. Whatever your choice, I think that topics in such a section MUST include fair warning as to content, such as "slash" or "violence", etc. so that people who really don't want to see that don't have to find out the hard way that it's there.

I'm not sure how I feel about this to be honest, I'd be inclined to vote 'no' but I'm not quite sure why. I think it might encourage more extreme topics, and what if things like episode and character discussions spilled over into the restricted board? Everybody should be able to read those - it would have to be heavily moderated to ensure that the adult section would not take over. Whatever your choice, I think that topics in such a section MUST include fair warning as to content, such as "slash" or "violence", etc. so that people who really don't want to see that don't have to find out the hard way that it's there. I couldn't agree more - this is a terrific, brilliant little corner of the internet, I'd just hate to see it decline for any reason. I guess with proper moderation there's no reason why it couldn't work - having the members actually 'apply' for permission to access it would be a good move I think

I don't see why a forum made for people to chat about Foster's should need an adult/mature/whatever place. I don't really care, I guess(seeing as I'm terribly underage =P), but that's just my thought on this. *shrugs*

Insanefan DOES have a good point; many on this board ARE under the age of 18, which means that legally they cannot view, read, or discuss material that would, if it were in theaters, be rated "NC-17" or higher. The problem is, the mods do not really have any way to actually verify the ages of people on the board, and it would be easy enough for say, a 15-year-old, to lie and claim that he/she was over 18, but then if a parent or guardian of said minor were to find out, the board moderator/owner could possibly be held accountable and be forced to remove the board altogether. I know that there are indeed kids who lie about their ages to get on forums, etc., but it's something we still have to watch out for, especially with all the negative publicity about sites like MySite.com, and with the Federal government in this country trying to force search engine sites like Google to turn over all their search results in order to(so they say)catch child pornographers.

It is very easy to lie about ages on the Internet, and there may be someone that will say that they're 21, but in reality, they're only 14. If you do decide to do what you plan to do, Sparky, be careful. I'd hate for you to lose anything that is vital to your website (especially, if it's your account).

Exactly! I know it's protested that Foster's is not just for kids, but it IS intended for them(mostly...o.o).

Exactly! I know it's protested that Foster's is not just for kids, but it IS intended for them(mostly...o.o). I'd say that Foster's is for all ages, and is clearly intended as such, otherwise the writers and producers wouldn't go to such lengths as to include "in-jokes" and parodies that only adults or teens would get. STILL, it also appeals to younger kids as well, so on a site that is related to the show, you have to expect children under 18 to be present. A few years ago, I was on a "Lilo and Stitch" group on Yahoo, and the moderator decided to allow someone to post hentai pics, many of which depicted sex with child characters. We nearly lost our group after someone complained to Yahoo that their child was on that group and had access to those pics. The moderator realized that a mistake had been made, but it ultimately did fracture the group into those who wanted the pics to stay, and those who disliked them(of whom I was one), and the group disbanded. I would hate to see that happen here, with this group. pitbulllady

I voted that it doesn't really matter to me. There's something like that on Nickdisk for serious disscusion and debates where you can post adult topics. I read some of the topics, and only posted on there once or twice. I'd proably do the same if there was something on here like that.

Well this is why I wanted this discussion. I *personally* am not interested in sex, but there are other adult topics I imagine that could come up. I just wanted to know if there was this driving need for people to be able to have an adult section on a Foster's forum. We don't have to do it.
