I am uploading vBulletin to my server as I type - hopefully I got the config.php file right and it will actually *work*...
I'm not sure how long it will actually take for me to get everything set for people to start registering and posting, but here's some stuff for people to know:
I want a "cold-turkey" transfer. I'll post an announcement about it before-hand of course, but I plan to actually shut down this board temporarily, and turn off both registrations and posting on all the boards, and post of course a link to the new board, then bring this board back up in "read only" mode. That way no one will be able to register here any more, and no one will be able to post. And there will be a prominent post with not only the link to the new board but clear instructions on little things you might want to do when you register over there.
Such as: pick a good name. Because on vBulletin, you can't change your screenname the way you can here, so the name you register with will be your permanent screenname. So be sure to pick the one you want the first time. Also, there will not only be an Introductions board, where *everyone* is entitled to an intro post (whether or not you're from the old board), but there will also be a special board where people who are migrating over from this board can just post once briefly to announce their arrival so I can go over to this board and grab their post count and join date and port those over to their new account. Hopefully that will work the way I want.
As for the new chat room, I can't afford the fully-featured one just yet, but when we do get it, it will also require registration. I'm still mulling over whether or not to allow open registration on it or if I should manually register people to avoid anyone from registering multiple times to impersonate other members who hadn't themselves registered, if you know what I mean. (Yeah I'm paranoid.)
Anyways. This thread is open for discussion.

You deserve to be paranoid, Sparky.
I'm glad you'll be preserving post counts. But, it would be fun to put all of the old members at the same place as the "new" members, just because. XD
-edit: Will vBulletin have the same signature / avatar options as ProBoards and most other foruming systems?

Fun for the new members, sure. Hey I just found something neat...looks like there's a way to do "multiple quoting" in a reply on vBulletin (if it's enabled, which of course I am). Like, if you want to quote multiple seperate posts in your reply, you can click the quote button on one post and get your posting box, you know, and then you can scroll back up and click the quote button on a different post and that quote will appear in your same reply box. Isn't that cool?

So I could do this...
Only have the name of the poster and such? Neato. =D

Well I mean, you can even quote *different* people in a single post.

That's awesome, usually if I want to quote more than one thing I have to quote one post and paste it all into Notepad and click quote again.
I also agree that you have the right to be paranoid.

Paranoia is a healthy emotion.

(Sorry, this ought to have been posted in the Kiosk so I moved it...) Well, I'm chuggin' away at it...Looks like the only way I can allow avatars is to make it so they are uploaded to my server, so that's okay, however I am not enabling uploading signature images or any other images ("attachments") as I know I couldn't afford the bandwidth. I'm setting the restrictions on the avatars to mimic Livejournal: 100x100 pixels and max 40 KB (I think that's right). Since everyone will be able to upload their own avatars anyways should I have some "built-in" avatars (like we have here) or not? I'm thinking that most would wind up unused and just take up space, so I'm not sure. Also we will be able to have pretty much unlimited smilies over there, so maybe CG will make us some more. We can certainly also have some plain ones too.

I don't really care about signature images. Four years ago, I did, but now -- meh. As for avatars, I'm going to continue to upload. I will likely continue to use the one I have right now.

And I think it's perfectly normal to be paranoid. I'm very paranoid too.

The smilies are installed! The only thing is there's 17 and they're set up to display in a "block" of 18 to the right of your post, so there's 17 Foster's smilies and then one plain sad smilie in spot #18, lol. Okay I hope I set it up right but I want to adopt the ranking system used on another vBulletin board I'm on. It goes like this: when you join you have a "newbie" rank, like we have here. You make a certain number of posts and you go up to the next rank, just like we have here. In fact I plugged in all the same ranks and their required post numbers that we have here. BUT there's a twist: upon being a member for a certain amount of TIME, the system automatically upgrades the user to a new member category with the ability to...set a custom title. So if a person is a member long enough, number of posts having nothing to do with it, they get the cool ability to set their own custom title, so everyone can see that they've been around a long time. Now, I was thinking a year (on the other board I'm on its a year and a half). I know it sounds like a long time but I think it *ought* to be a fairly long time. HOPEFULLY what will happen is, when people from this board migrate over and notify me so I can port in their original join date, I can rig it so they'll be entered into the proper category and everything. So if you've been a member HERE at least a year, its not like you'd have to be on the new board for a year, if that makes sense. Same with the post counts, if I plug them into the right spot in a member's profile it ought to adjust their ranking accordingly. I just hope I don't mess everything up.

I'm sure you'll be fine, I'm really looking forward to moving!^^ I just saw the new skin on your blog btw, but I couldn't comment as I don't have an account. I hope you don't mind me mentioning it here, but I don't think it looks shoddy at all. I LOVE it! And I don't mind about sig pics either, avatars are fine for me.
